I mean, this is so So here's the skinny:
A member of the Irish public has taken it upon themselves to report Stephen Fry to the Gardaí on account of what he said in the above YouTube clip from RTE's The Meaning of Life show with Gay Byrne from two years ago.
What is laughable, is this is actually considered to be a crime and the Gardaí are legally obliged to investigate.
This could potentially lead to a fine of up to €25,000 under Irish defamation law.
Defamation. Seriously. I'm not kidding.
Now, you may be thinking this is some residual archaic law that has survived from the days of a stricter catholic Ireland, but you'd be wrong. This stipulation exists from a law that was passed in 2010. Seven fucking years ago.
Can one actually defame a fictional character? I mean, this is so ridiculous, I'm kind of thinking that perhaps whomever made the report, did so deliberately to highlight the absurdity of the law... Hmmmm
